Tutetawhā Marae Redevelopment: Taupō
Entrusted with the value engineering, redesign, and reconstruction of this significant kaupapa, RBS Group worked closely with the marae and trustees to deliver a modern, resilient, and culturally grounded redevelopment.
The project included the construction of a new 600m² wharekai, showcasing the natural beauty of its exposed structural timber and seamless concealed connections. Extensive restoration was also carried out on the nearly 100‑year‑old wharepuni, which was lifted, re‑piled, structurally upgraded, insulated, extended, and carefully wrapped in a protective korowai to preserve its history and tikanga.
Both buildings feature durable Abodo timber cladding, selected to ensure long‑term performance and low maintenance for the marae. Additional works included new fencing and the construction of the waharoa and pae manuhiri, delivered in collaboration with MSD.
As main contractor, RBS Group coordinated designers, stakeholders, and all aspects of planning, management, and compliance.
